In 2019 Ronald Ross primary School governors became aware that UK Power Networks were decommissioning the site at the front of our school. Enquiries have led us to believe that the Local Authority will offer this site to us, when it becomes vacant.

Charles Runcie has been in contact with UKPN and the LA to move the project forward as it is our belief that a purpose-built new building on the existing energy unit site would allow a standalone wraparound care centre to be built; this would be separate from the main school, but within the grounds and an extension to our current site.

Direct access from the street would allow for activity within the building to be independent of school operations outside usual school hours.  Access from the school side allows close integration with school activities during school hours. This results in a versatile space that would significantly benefit the school and wider local community.

Benefits for parents and students attending Ronald Ross:

  • Easily accessible wraparound care for working parents, or those who need earlier/later school drop off and pickup. It would lead to earlier drop off and pick up times than the existing in-school wraparound care. For many parents, the availability of flexible wraparound care is a key factor in selecting schools, so this would make Ronald Ross more attractive to a wider number of potential parents.
  • More versatile spaces for after school clubs and extra-curricular activities such as music lessons, homework clubs, sports clubs etc broadening the opportunities for students to explore other interest areas.

Benefits for the wider local community:

  • The space would be available outside of usual school days including evenings, weekends and school holidays for other groups to use. This could be for holiday camps, extra classes for existing students, and students from other schools requiring childcare outside of normal school days.
  • The space would be available for other community activities such as social and fund-raising events for parents, teachers, and adult societies and evening classes. This could provide additional income for the school and develop the school as a focus for activity within the local area

Please keep an eye for progress reports about this project right here. We are currently waiting for UKPN to resolve what they will do with operational equipment that is still in use.
